Senior System/Server Administrator

The Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) is seeking a highly skilled Senior System/Server Administrator with experience as a Subject-Matter Expert (SME) in system administration and technical advocacy. The selected candidate will be responsible for managing, maintaining, and securing IBM iSeries (AS/400) server infrastructure, ensuring compliance with Department of Defense (DoD) security standards and operational requirements.

This role requires expertise in COBOL programming, software development life cycle (SDLC), configuration management, and system security protocols. The Senior Administrator must be capable of working within the DISA-approved software tools and infrastructure constraints while supporting mission-critical systems.


Responsibilities:

  • Administer, configure, and optimize IBM iSeries (AS/400) Servers supporting DISA operations.
  • Develop, maintain, and troubleshoot COBOL-based applications within a secure DoD environment.
  • Implement Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) best practices in compliance with DoD directives.
  • Perform software version control and configuration management to ensure system integrity.
  • Manage tape backup, disaster recovery, and business continuity processes.
  • Ensure compliance with DoD Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIGs) and other security mandates.
  • Conduct database migrations and optimize system performance while maintaining data integrity and security.
  • Implement and maintain encryption protocols to safeguard sensitive DoD data.
  • Utilize IBM iAccess Client Solutions, IBM Navigator, and IBM Digital Certificate Manager for secure system administration.
  • Support implementation activities, including testing, documentation, and risk assessments.
  • Monitor system logs using IBM Syslog Reporting Manager and conduct proactive security audits.

Required Skills:


  • 10 to 15 years of experience in system/server administration within a DoD or government environment.
  • Expertise in IBM iSeries (AS/400) Servers administration, COBOL programming, and HMC (Hardware Management Console).
  • Strong knowledge of DoD cybersecurity policies, DISA STIGs, and RMF compliance.
  • Experience in configuration management, database migrations, and system performance optimization.
  • Proficiency in tape management, file exchange protocols, and cryptographic security measures.
  • Experience with IBM Syslog Reporting Manager, IBM Digital Certificate Manager, and IBM Navigator.
  • Familiarity with cryptographically hashed audit tools and secure file exchange protocols.
  • Proficiency in Java and IBM iAccess Client Solutions.
  • Strong understanding of FISMA, NIST 800-53, and DoD IT compliance frameworks.
